Using Clarity to Resolve Issues at Work

In business, Managers may utilise communication skills by asking questions to resolve issues.

There has been greater advancements in communication in the past 10 years, than in the previous 100 years that preceded it, purely because we pool all the various methods together to achieve results outside assumption, expectation, title and limited exposure.

We are in a greater position now to bring people together rather than keep them apart and diminish succession, expansion and replacement planning.

There is no place for politics, convenience, seniority or click groups in leadership. Successful leadership thrives on tolerance, attitude and focus. It is not an end-goal, rather a life plan constantly identifying, applying, measuring, amending, reflecting and repeating in order to achieve a result that aligns to all members. Leadership is ‘an’ education not ‘the’ education.

Clarity in communication holds purpose for 3 specific reasons:

  1. Gathering information to better understand a persons perceptions

  2. Whittling away problems

  3. Enriching and Widening a persons perceptions to identify new possibility and potential

One example of workplace communication may be:

Employee: “I have a problem”

Manager: “What specifically is the problem ?” - gather information

Employee: “Everyone is talking behind my back”

Manager: “Everyone is talking behind your back ? - challenge generalisation

Employee: “No, but (name, name, name) are talking behind my back”

Manager: “How specifically do you know they are talking behind your back ? - challenges the mind-read

Employee: “(name2) said (name) was talking behind my back”

Manager: “What specifically did (name2) say about that ?” - gather information

Employee: “(name2) said (name) did (action - behaviour)….”

Manager: “How specifically does their (action - behaviour) mean that they were talking about you behind your back ?” - challenges complex equivalence

These skills are useful dynamically when communicating with others. The questions we ask depend on the result we want to achieve.

In helping people close the gap between where they are and where they want to be and that is what leadership is all about, we have a plethora of tools to help people make that transition and language is the glue that holds all the tools and techniques together.

Isaac Newton: “The reason why I know so much is because I stand on the tall shoulders of all those who have come before me”

Supporting the growth and engagement of business owners, staff and forward vision is always a privilege.

If it matters to You : it matters to Me
